The “Intelligent Climate Alert Network for Outdoor Workers” application (ICAN): A technological solution to mitigate the impacts of climate change on the health of outdoor workers

SLO – The ICAN app is a non-profit digital tool developed under a research programme on the health impacts of climate change on outdoor workers in urban Vietnam. The programme is funded by the Wellcome Trust and implemented by the SocialLife Research Institute, in collaboration with National Centre for Social Research – NatCen (UK) and other partners.
ICAN is designed to support outdoor workers by providing timely, localised information on weather and climate-related health risks. The app is freely available on both iOS and Android platforms and offers the following key benefits:
- Improved understanding of occupational health risks and working environments.
- Access to real-time, personalised alerts about extreme weather and related health hazards.
- Updates on labour news and worker-support policies.
- Opportunities to connect with experts in health, labour, and climate adaptation.
SocialLife aims to engage local authorities, associations and social organisations, meteorology and health experts, and cybersecurity companies to further improve the user experience of the ICAN application. Specifically, we would like to:
- Ensure ICAN’s sustainable operation by transferring ICAN’s management to a relevant public-sector agency for continued service.
- Strengthen partnerships for ICAN’s effective implementation.
- Promote inclusive and equitable access, meeting the diverse needs of outdoor workers.
- Raise workers’ awareness about ICAN through strategic outreach efforts.
- Strengthen data security and privacy for users.
